The Meat Industry is Responsible for 51% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions!

A new article in World Watch magazine reports that livestock production causes 51% of the greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.  Previously, the United Nations had reported that livestock production causes 18% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.

What does this mean?  It means that changing our diet is the most important thing we can do to combat global climate change!  Now, more than ever, it's vital that everyone reduces the amount of meat they eat.  Even if you eliminate meat from your diet one day a week, it makes a difference.  If every American would do this it would have an enormous impact and if every American would change their diet to mostly vegetarian, we would do more to combat global climate change than any legislation or any other measure would accomplish!  You can see the article at http://www.worldwatch.org/node/6294.

Don't Idle Your Engine!

I took a walk around the block this morning and saw at least 3 people in their cars, talking on their cell phone with the engine idling.  OK.  I guess it's safer for them to be talking on the cell phone with the car parked than to be driving while talking on their cell phone but still, I find this habit extremely annoying!  Not only is there a law in New York City against engine idling, this practice adds to air pollution, it contributes to asthma, and it wastes gas!

Does anyone have any ideas about what to do about this problem?  Sometimes, I just want to go around and yell at everyone.  I wish we had an enforcement group that would issue fines for this.  I bet they would pay for themselves.  What do you think?
